This week we jumped back into Audio Design with more audio assignments and the beginnings of our radio show group projects. At the beginning of the week, we formed groups with each other online and came up with a theme or topic for our show. Our show will have to be between 20-30 minutes and in some way connect to the 80s theme of the class. My group is focusing on 80s films and how they hold up today, both literally and idealistically. Would scenes or characters like XYZ be as welcomed or tolerated today? What would some aspects of the movie have to change in order to be better understood and in today’s era (technology, lingo, etc)?
My group met up in the HCC and discussed all of these ideas and more, and in the end, we came up with a list of tasks for each person to work on over the week, as well as how we wanted to organize our show and broke into teams. Since films are such a broad topic, we narrowed it down by genre. Personally, I’m a big fan of horror movies and the 80s was a big boom in the horror genre. Many classics like Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, IT, Pet Semetary, The Shining, The Thing, and many many more came out during the 80s. My group is going to focus on 2 or 3 movies and discuss and illustrate what made these into classics; was it nostalgia or were these movies actually the template for the future of horror. Our other group is focusing on Romantic Comedies and is discussing how the passage of time has affected these movies–how they hold up in today’s social norms.
This week we only had to do 10 stars worth of audio assignments since we’d be working on our radio show project for the majority of our usual time. I missed the part where our bumpers and commercials could count towards our star count and had already finished them all by Monday so I did a little extra this week. (I didn’t mind at all, I enjoyed it). I made a poster(above) and a bumper for the radio show, check us out! My favorite assignment I did this week was to create a scene using only sounds. Immediately I wanted to do something with space, so I made an alien city out of sound. I had a great time making it and I’m very proud of how it turned out.
